Indonesian counter terrorism authorities have arrested the suspected leader of Al Qaeda in Aceh (UID 1227405). The terrorist organisation allegedly planned attacks targeting the President, foreign dignitaries and embassies and luxury hotels. A police spokesman stated that 'the suspect was actively involved with preparing plans of terror, including the military training ground in Aceh.' He is reported to have had a close association with the late Dulmatin, the senior figure behind the Bali bombings in 2002, and a number of other jihadist elements.

Anwar al-Aulaqi a member of Al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula has been designated by the UN and OFAC. He is reported to have played a role in the plot to bomb a Northwest Airlines flight in the United States in 2009. World-Check profiled al Aulaqi seven years ago.

Faisal Shahzad has pleaded guilty in the Manhattan federal court to all counts of the 10-count indictment against him, for allegedly driving a car bomb into Times Square. Shahzad was arrested on 3 May at JFK Airport attempting to fly to Dubai.

Khalid Ouazzani pleaded guilty to taking part in a conspiracy to provide financial support to a terrorist group. Ouazzani, originally from Morocco became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2006, admitted that he sent $23,500 to al-Qaida between August 2007 and mid-2008.

Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari who pleaded guilty to terrorism offences and fraud in September 2009, has been sentenced to 112 months behind bars, by a New York Federal Court.

Senior US Defense officials have met with Yemen President Ali Abdullah Salehto, reportedly to discuss fighting terrorism amid a warning of Al-Qaeda maritime attacks. Discussions centred on the issues of bilateral relations and means of cooperation in security matters, training, fighting terrorism, and protection of coasts. Al-Qaeda has indicated that it wants to control Bab al-Mandab, which links the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea, the strait is navigated by oil tankers and other maritime vessels which pass through the Suez Canal.

At the end of January 2010, the United Nations Counter Terrorism Implementation Task Force, together with German Federal Foreign office brought together experts from the UN member states and its agencies as well as regional organisations, and in addition experts from academia and civil society to review existing and possible further legal measures to curtail the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes.

The British government has announced a ban on the radical Islamist group Islam4UK under counter-terrorism laws. An offshoot of al-Muhajiroun (UID 38696), Islam4UK has already been proscribed under two other names – al-Ghurabaa and The Saved Sect. Membership to Islam4UK is now a criminal offence punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Al-Muhajiroun was co-founded by the radical cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed (UID 38697), now exiled from Britain.
